History

The location surrounding Port Everglades makes it seem like the ideal, natural harbor. In reality, however, it is a manmade port that took almost two decades to make. The area lies within the municipalities of Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and Dania Beach, making it ideal for residents coming from the surrounding areas.

In 1911, Florida passed a resolution that called for a deep-water port to ship cargo from the north to the west side of the country. Just 2 years later, the Fort Lauderdale Harbor Company was established and began digging out Lake Mabel Cut to open up The New River to the sea. This was a small step in the larger plan and it gave access to small boats. In 1924, the mayor of Hollywood bought more land right next to the lake and established the Hollywood Harbor Development Company to further the process of building the harbor. The residents of Broward County gathered to watch the president push a button to break the rock barrier between the harbor and the Atlantic ocean. Hilariously, the button did not work and the barrier was removed by other means later.

By 1928, the bay was ready and the new name ‘Port Everglades’ was chosen at a name-changing competition to symbolize its connection to fertile agricultural land at the port’s very backdoor. It took almost no time for cruise ships to begin frequenting this port, with the first line being inaugurated just 3 years later in 1931.

Culture

While Port Everglades is relatively recent, the adjacent area of Fort Lauderdale has been inhabited for over 2,000 years. The resulting culture is an exciting mix of Spanish and English influences along with remnants of the original Tequesta tribe. This is especially visible in the food, where dishes like fish tacos and scallop risottos are flavorful combinations of Hispanic and European influences.

Along with its rich history, Fort Lauderdale has embraced the modern and is a bustling, vibrant city. The Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is a colorful and happening lane that connects the beach to central downtown. Many films were shot in this area and the bars that dot the lane take you back to the 70s and 80s when the city was a bustling student town.

Weather & Best Time to Go

As a coastal area, Port Everglades is relatively mild in temperature if we compare it to the rest of the United States. Since it’s a tropical area, it is generally wet for most of the year. However, the port receives the most rainfall between May and October. The summers can get hot and rainy, with temperatures ranging between 80 F and 100 F.

The winters are mild and much drier and are the ideal time to visit the port. Temperatures during winter range between 60 F and 85 F, making it an extremely pleasant time to visit. This is the high season for the port and a majority of cruise liners function during this time.

Travel Essentials & Tips

Port Everglades is a warm place so it is recommended that you carry loose-fitting casuals and other clothing that is breathable and light. However, places with air conditioning can get chilly occasionally so pack at least one jacket with you. Since the sun can get harsh during the days, sunscreen and lip balm with high SPF is also highly recommended. If you plan on visiting the port during the wet season, be sure to carry an umbrella or a raincoat for emergencies.

While tipping is a standard throughout the city, some restaurants by the beach may include the tip within the bill. Be sure to cross-check the final amount through the bill before you pay to avoid any confusion. Port Everglades is a lively tourist stop where there is no shortage of things to do before you board your ship. As long as you are prepared for the city and its climate, you are guaranteed to have a blast!
